Physical Therapy Expert Witness

Physical therapy expert witnesses evaluate treatment plan design, exercise prescription appropriateness, manual therapy technique, fall risk assessment, and discharge planning to determine whether rehabilitation care met the standard expected of a reasonably prudent physical therapist in the same setting. They interpret functional outcome measures, treatment notes, and progress documentation to assess whether the frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy were adequate for the diagnosis.

Cases commonly requiring physical therapy expertise include patient falls during therapy sessions, aggravation of existing injuries through inappropriate exercise prescription, failure to progress or modify treatment based on patient response, delayed referral back to physicians for worsening symptoms, and insurance disputes over medical necessity and treatment duration. These matters require an expert who understands both clinical reasoning and the operational realities of outpatient, inpatient, and home health PT practice.

Subspecialty areas including orthopedic physical therapy, neurologic rehabilitation, geriatric physical therapy, sports physical therapy, and vestibular rehabilitation each involve different evidence-based protocols and outcome expectations. An expert with board certification or concentrated practice in the relevant area provides opinions that reflect specialty-specific standards rather than generic rehabilitation principles.
