Medical Malpractice Expert Witness — Nursing Standard of Care

Nursing standard-of-care experts analyze whether assessments, monitoring frequency, escalation to physicians, medication administration, and documentation met the duties of a reasonably prudent nurse in the same role and setting. They translate charting systems, nurse-to-patient ratios, chain-of-command policies, and scope-of-practice rules into opinions jurors can apply when physician conduct is not the sole issue—or when nursing failures compound physician error.

These experts are central in fall and pressure-injury cases, failure-to-monitor deteriorating patients, sepsis and rapid-response timing, medication errors and line infections, informed consent and restraint use, and long-term care litigation involving wound care and abuse reporting. Plaintiffs and defense teams both need nurses who can articulate what the record should have shown if the standard had been met.

Specialty certification (e.g., critical care, oncology, emergency, pediatrics) and experience in the same unit type (ICU, ED, med-surg, SNF) matter as much as years licensed. A vetted expert with aligned practice context can credibly address custom-and-usage within that facility class and rebut experts whose only exposure is textbook nursing.
