Dermatology Expert Witness

Dermatology expert witnesses evaluate whether skin lesion assessment, biopsy decisions, pathologic interpretation, and follow-up scheduling met the standard of care for the clinical presentation. They address delayed melanoma diagnosis, Mohs surgery technique and margin adequacy, management of severe drug eruptions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, and cosmetic procedure complications such as laser injury and injectable-related vascular occlusion.

Cases commonly involving dermatology experts include failure to biopsy suspicious lesions resulting in advanced melanoma, misdiagnosis of basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, scarring and disfigurement from procedural error, allergic contact dermatitis in occupational settings, and product liability claims involving topical medications or cosmetic devices. These matters often hinge on photographic documentation and whether the clinical appearance warranted earlier intervention.

Subspecialties including dermatopathology, pediatric dermatology, Mohs micrographic surgery, cosmetic dermatology, and dermatologic immunology each involve different diagnostic algorithms and procedural competencies. An expert practicing in the relevant subspecialty can credibly address whether a community-standard dermatologist would have recognized the same findings and acted differently.
